O young men of twenty, how many of your friends have died, and you are still alive
O young men of twenty, how many of your friends have died, and you are still alive!
O youths of thirty years, in a short space of time you have become young, yet you have no regrets!
O forty-year-olds, when is childhood over, yet you are still drunk on the game!
O elders of fifty, you have passed the half of a hundred years, but you have not yet learned justice!
O old men of sixty, you have reached the battle-field of death, yet are you still busy with vain play and laughter! You wasted a lot of time.
Once Fudayl (Rahimahullah) asked a man, 'How old are you?' The man replied, "Sixty years." He said to him, 'For sixty years you have been walking in the path of your Lord, you will soon reach it.'
O old man, are you rejoicing in your age? You're not rejoicing because you're getting older, you're actually getting younger, so you're rejoicing!
Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said, 'You are the sum of a few days. Whenever a day passes from you, a part of you passes away.'
